Our Story

Founded in 2020 as part of the National Science Foundation’s premier AI Research Institutes, the Institute for Student-AI Teaming (iSAT) is transforming the relationship between students, educators, and artificial intelligence.

We believe learning should be joyful, driven by curiosity, and grounded in teamwork. Moving beyond isolated screen-time and personalized intelligent tutoring, we envision the classrooms of the future being transformed into dynamic knowledge-building communities where AI acts as a collaborative partner, fostering deep reasoning and amplifying student voices.

We are building the classrooms of tomorrow by focusing on three strategic areas:

  • Creating the AI Partners: Designing the theoretical and technical architecture for seamless student-AI teamwork.
    Ìý
  • Equipping the Future: Driving workforce development by bringing vital STEM and AI literacy instruction to 25,000 K-12 students and their teachers.
    Ìý
  • Uniting Learners and Leaders: Serving as a national nexus for tech developers, researchers, and learning institutions to scale educational solutions together.

Our ApproachÌý

We operate with a commitment toÌýResponsible Innovation. We want students and educators to understand exactly how our technology works. By providing complete transparency "under the hood," we help students become critical thinkers who know how to leverage the latest technology, empowering the next generation of professional leaders.

To translate our research into AI-enhanced learning solutions, we have built a strong community that bridges theoretical science with hands-on application. Here is how we are achieving our mission:

  • Mobilizing Cross-Disciplinary Expertise: We bring together more than 30 researchers across 15 distinct research fields to drive the complete R&D lifecycle.
    Ìý
  • Empowering the Next Generation of Scholars: We provide unparalleled, cross-disciplinary training programs. By equipping students and early-career researchers with specialized, multi-disciplinary skillsets, we are actively preparing a highly capable cohort ready to lead the future of educational technology.
    Ìý
  • Anchoring Research in the Community: Our development does not happen in a silo. We actively engage a broad network of educators, students, and community stakeholders throughout every single phase of our research, ensuring our solutions are securely grounded in the actual realities of classroom learning.
